A Botswana Defence Force UAS crashed at Thebephatshwa Airbase last week after experiencing technical problems while in flight.
Sources have revealed that the machine, which was operated from an office on the ground experienced technical problems and was brought down after several hours in flight circling above the camp.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that there was poor network to operate the flying machine and the only available option was to shoot it down. But there is confusion among BDF soldiers as to what the aircraft was doing there, as some believe that it is a spy plane.
Efforts to get an official comment from BDF protocol and public affairs officer Colonel Paul Sharp hit a snag, as his office phones rang unanswered, while his mobile phone was off. Meanwhile Superintendent Andrew Bosilong of Molepolole Police Station said he knew nothing about the crash, though the airbase is under his policing area.
“They would have reported it to my office, I don’t know about it. Maybe it was reported elsewhere,” he said yesterday.
