On Thursday June 9, 2011, the first meeting of the NVvL network for unmanned aviation was held. Nearly 70 individuals from the sector participated in the meeting, representing more than 40 companies and organizations.

This network in the field of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) was founded with the aim of bringing individuals, working in the UAS-sector, in contact with each other to share knowledge and experience. This stimulates advancement of the development and deployment of unmanned aircraft systems in the Netherlands. The NVvL UAS Network was founded by Jan-Floris Boer (NLR), Ron Leijgraaf (NL-CAA), Rob van Nieuwland (In2Nova) and Jennifer Telussa (Geocopter). It is the intention of the initiators of this network to organize a meeting every three to four months, which may consist of a lecture afternoon or evening, company visit/tour or a workshop on a specific theme.

At the founding meeting, ten organizations from the Dutch UAS sector presented their activities: MAVlab TU Delft, ADSE, In2Nova, Geocopter, Amsterdam-Amstelland Police, URSUS Airborne, Sky Camera and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation each with a short presentation. Subsequently, the Dutch Civil Aviation Authorities in a detailed presentation discussed the current and expected regulations for unmanned aircraft in the Netherlands. A lively discussion followed on the current legislation and required practice to perform missions using unmanned aircraft.

Finally a brief inventory was made on possible topics for future meetings. The evening ended with an animated reception. The event was held at the National Aerospace Laboratory NLR in Amsterdam, who also sponsored this meeting.

Those interested in the UAS Network can register through the website: www.nvvl.org. Netherlands Association of Aeronautical Engineers NVvL

The Netherlands Association of Aeronautical Engineers NVvL is an association which provides a common platform for all with a professional or a private interest in aerospace technology to share knowledge and experience.

The NVvL UAS Network will hopefully be the basis of an organization that should be able to give the Dutch UAS community a voice on the European and international stage, and be able to play an active and constructive role in EUROCAE WG73’s Small RPA Expert Group (see www.uvs-info.com), which is chaired by Ron van de Leijgraaf (CAA, The Netherlands).
