Florida was the site of a target drone crash on Wednesday as the unmanned aircraft experienced problems during take-off. The crash led to an explosion and closed US 98 Highway, near Tyndall Air Base.
It was believed to be a QF-4 target drone. It contains a self-destruct mechanism, which if activated could cause significant damage. Hence, the closing of the highway.
Plumes of black smoke were seen for miles around as locals reported an airplane crash. This is the second such incident within the last few weeks, another QF-4 was self-destructed over the Gulf of Mexico following issues on a routine flight.
The QF-4 is a target drone modified from the F-4 Phantom II, a jet that has been developed by the US Air force since the 1960s.
No injuries have been reported due to the incident.
