British Columbia Tests UAS for Search and Rescue Operations

Search and Rescue crews in Coquitlam, B.C. have begun testing unmanned aircraft, in the hope that having a bird’s eye view could help them save more lives.

UAS can operate in any weather and can often reach areas a helicopter can’t reach. And as Deborah Goble reports, they could be the future of search and rescue in British Columbia.

  1. “…UAS can operate in any weather…” Huh? That is absolutely incorrect – UA of all sizes and functions are less tolerant of poor weather than manned aircraft. It is this form of ignorant disinformation that makes integration of UAS into airspace so difficult and it just fosters the popular ignorance what the actual strengths and weaknesses of UA.

  2. While one can hope that the mainstream media will get the story right, we need as an industry to focus on the big picture, not the problematic. The very fact that CBC is running a news item talking about how UAS can contribute to real social needs is a positive.
