A Turkish army-affiliated software company has introduced a new warning system boasting an integrated drone at the CeBIT technologies fair in Germany.

The Turkish Armed Forces Foundation-affiliated software and systems company, HAVELSAN, introduced at the 2015 CeBIT Fair the Sezgin, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) integrated early warning system.

Business development manager for HAVELSAN, which designs various defense systems, Bünyamin Kahraman Karadeniz said Wednesday that “Sezgin” (Turkish word for insightful) was the result of a joint project with the Turkish Gendarmerie General Command, which aims to protect important establishments, military stations or other plants, from terror attacks.

“We are placing different seismic, motion, visual sensors in stone-like artificial objects,” Karadeniz said, adding cameras were sometimes implemented as well.

When movement or vibration is detected, he explained, the data are transferred immediately to a command center.

“Let’s say that somebody is moving but we cannot know if they are villagers or terrorists. At this point, an unmanned aerial vehicle automatically goes to the place from where the signal comes and transmits live video footage to the center,” he said.

This can help security forces to take the necessary measures to prevent a potential attack, he added.

Karadeniz said that the early warning system will be largely used in an integrated way to protect especially the border control points.

The early warning system’s tests have been successful in the Turkish cities of Ankara and Tunceli, according to Karadeniz.

Karadeniz added that there were numerous demands for the system coming from outside the country.

HAVELSAN, founded in 1982, has been designing and planning critical defense systems, such as the Homeland Security System, in Turkey.

CeBIT is an international trade fair for information technologies, telecommunications, software and services. It has been open to visitors in Hanover, Germany, from March 16 to 19.
