UK FPV Grand Prix Drone Race Scheduled

A high-octane aerial race between motorised drones is set to take place in Grimsby this summer. The FPV Grand Prix will head to the Grimsby Town Cricket Club on July 19.

The recreational use of Multi-Rotors is reportedly on the rise and users from around the world have got together to create race events.

In a similar vein to the Red Bull Air Race which sees planes fly through obstacles against the clock, the FPV Grand Prix will pit drones against each other in a high speed aerial battle.

Organiser Ben Cairns of the UK Mini Quad Store, said: “We don’t consider this an alternative sport, but rather an extreme sport.

“By flying through air gates, under low obstacles, and slaloms, we can increase the fun, and make it more challenging to the pilots.

“Also, with four or five in the air at the same time, the action is close, and blade to blade racing is common.

“We use a small, but powerful Mini Quadcopter, that has a small camera and video transmitter on it, so we can fly them “FPV” or first person view.

“We see what the pilot would see if sat on the front of the craft. Normal quads, such as the DJI Phantom can reach around 40mph, where-as our can reach 60-70mph.”
