Boeing will provide technical support to Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) to build Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for air quality monitoring.

A group of 24 undergraduate students from the college will benefit from the collaboration with Boeing. During the project, which runs until May 29, they are required to build a fixed-wing UAV to be fitted with air quality health monitoring sensors.
Technical overview of the UAV design will be provided by Boeing as well as technical support and mentorship. The UAVs will be tested and evaluated in May by a panel of judges from Boeing and industrial partners at Al Khor airfield. Students will be assessed on the aircraft’s flight performance and its ability to accurately gather environmental data. The final testing will be followed by an awards ceremony at QU in May.

QU vice president and chief academic officer Dr Mazen Hasna said the partnership with Boeing will benefit QU engineering students in strengthening their skills and help them design and build UAVs.

“This collaboration underlines QU’s ongoing efforts to develop partnerships with international leading institutions from the field of science and technology, and enrich its students’ experience to become the next generation of professionals equipped to handle scientific challenges, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.”

Boeing Middle East, North Africa and Turkey president Bernard Dunn said the company is a strong supporter of Qatar’s national development goals including skills development.

“We are keen to interest the next generation of Qataris in science, technology, engineering and math education fields and careers such as aerospace. Projects like this help Qatar University students build those types of skills and passion, while also addressing a critical environmental concern.”

CENG dean Dr Rashid Alammari described the project as every budding engineer’s dream and support and mentoring by experts in the field is an invaluable opportunity that will enhance the students’ career aspirations.
“At CENG, we continue to provide our students with experiences and opportunities that heighten their skill, creativity and enthusiasm as they prepare themselves towards future exciting and fulfilling professional roles and responsibilities in the engineering field.”
