A young woman lounging by the pool at the Palms Place resort in Las Vegas, was injured when a DJI Phantom drone fell on her. She suffered a deep cut in her leg.The drones battery also burst into flames and burned through a pool chair. Palms Place said in a statement it has strict policies against anything being launched or thrown off of balconies.
The guest flying the drone was immediately kicked out of the hotel.
Since the hotel is within 5 miles of McCarran Airport, the drone operator would have needed to notify air traffic control and airport manager.
It’s idiots like this that will make the industry lose all hope in becoming a robust forward moving industry. I think every single drone pilot should be required to earn their own commercial use part 107 cert.
Nice – the ‘cherry on the cake’
Mark:
I agree that UAS pilots, even hobbyists should get their Remote Airman’s Certificate. If for not other reason than to demonstrate an understanding of the rules, regulations, and safety requirements with regard to UAV operations. It is not a simple toy.
To do this there will need be to significant changes in the laws and regulations surrounding sUAS’s. Currently the FAA is not allowed to have private, personal UAV’s to be registered. They can only require this for commercial usage.

Not mentioned in the story…Las Vegas has a zero drones law. This guy is facing more problems in his future should the city wish to make an example out of him. “Know before you fly” folks!
