Drone registration laws have been in effect in Ireland since 2015, however, they are due to get an update that will come into effect this year.
If you have a drone that weighs 1 kg or more and less than 25 kg needs to be properly registered per the Irish Aviation Authority.
At the moment over 11,000 drones across the country but this figure is set to increase this year thanks to the new law.
People who own drones that weigh over 250 grams are required to register them with the proper authorities.
According to the IAA, there are 11,197 drones currently registered in Ireland which is up from the 8,502 in December 2017.
For the first time ever, Europe-wide rules for registering drones has been agreed this year.
This comes after the absolute chaos in Gatwick Airport in London last month when hundreds of thousands of peoples flights were disrupted due to drones being spotted in the area.
Cork Airport was also affected by drones when they were also spotted around the airport.
Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune has urged people who own drones to make sure that they are very careful when they use them.
“Many people will have gotten drones as Christmas presents this year and will be perhaps looking to purchase them in the January sales,” Clune said to Joe.ie.
“With an exponential year-on-year growth of drone-related incidents, it is quite clear that drones will be a major safety challenge in the years to come.
“We should never forget that drones can do harm to people, they are a significant security threat and a risk to aircraft.”
Drones are categorized as an unmanned aircraft that can be operated remotely.
Clune added: “Drones are a sector of aviation that is fast developing and offers great potential to produce new jobs and growth.
“The increased use of drones does, however, bring up a range of legal and commercial issues, including public safety.”
