The Baykar group of Turkey recently unveiled news regarding the maiden flight of the inaugural prototype [RT-1] of the brand-new Bayraktar TB3, a UAV specifically designed for reconnaissance and offensive operations.
Debuting in March 2023, this innovative device holds roots in the much acclaimed Bayraktar TB2 UAV but has been purposefully evolved with a particular emphasis on deck-based deployment, using the advanced Turkish universal landing vessel, L 400 Anadolu, as its base.

Seeded in 2021, the Bayraktar TB3’s development aimed to take the blueprint of the Bayraktar TB2 and enhance it, resulting in a slightly enlarged iteration equipped with a host of components required for ship-based deployments, such as a collapsible wing and an arresting hook.
About Bayraktar TB3
The Bayraktar TB3 exhibits double the launch weight and payload capabilities compared to its predecessor, the TB2. This increased capacity indicates that the Bayraktar TB3 may potentially accommodate a broader spectrum of tools and armaments, thereby expanding its operational reach.
Further cementing this technical marvel, the highly-regarded Technical Director of Turkey’s Baykar Group, Selcuk Bayraktar, released photographs on March 27, 2023, showcasing the culmination of the inaugural flight prototype for the Bayraktar TB3 reconnaissance-strike unmanned aerial vehicle.
Bayraktar TB3 is an unmanned aerial vehicle developed by Baykar, a Turkish defense company. It is a tactical drone designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat missions. The TB3 has a wingspan of 12 meters and a length of 6.5 meters, making it a medium-sized UAV.
In terms of technical characteristics, the Bayraktar TB3 is equipped with advanced avionics and sensor systems, including electro-optical and infrared cameras, as well as synthetic aperture radar. These systems provide the UAV with the capability to gather real-time intelligence, detect targets, and perform precision strikes.
Operational Range and Armament
The operational range of the Bayraktar TB3 is approximately 150 kilometers, allowing it to cover a significant area during missions. It can operate at altitudes of up to 24,000 feet, providing a wide field of view and enhancing its surveillance capabilities.
The UAV is armed with various munitions, including precision-guided missiles and laser-guided bombs. It can carry a payload of up to 150 kilograms, enabling it to engage targets with high accuracy and effectiveness. The armament of the TB3 makes it a versatile platform for both surveillance and combat operations.
The Bayraktar TB3 is powered by an internal combustion engine, specifically a four-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine provides the necessary thrust for the UAV to achieve a maximum speed of around 130 kilometers per hour. The engine’s reliability and fuel efficiency contribute to the TB3’s endurance and operational capabilities.
In terms of size, the Bayraktar TB3 has a maximum takeoff weight of 650 kilograms. It is designed to be easily transportable and deployable, allowing for rapid deployment in various operational environments. The UAV’s compact size also enhances its maneuverability and agility during flight.
