Bentley Patents a Literal Flying B

Bentley patent filings discovered indicate that the company is developing a drone for use in its cars that will be based around the car’s “Flying B” logo.

The drone will be housed in the nose of the vehicle and can be deployed in a number of ways, both from inside and outside of the vehicle. The drone is proposed to have a lot of functionality for owners. Bentley’s filings indicate the drone can be used to find alternate driving routes in the event of traffic, locate parking spots, flag emergency services in the event of an accident, and even lead the owner back to their car.

Bentley’s filings show that the drone could be charged while in its dock, housed in the hood of the car, and that the drone won’t weigh more than 250 grams, which is the maximum allowable weight for an unregistered drone. The drone will not be shaped like a traditional drone, though it will use propellers to move around and hover in a number of preset locations above and near the car.

Bentley instead wants a “plinth” or “coffin” shape to the drone, with illumination for the landing pad, drone, and of course, the logo on top. Owners would be able to control the drone from their phone, tablet, or computer, as well as in the car via its infotainment system.

How specifically landing will work isn’t described, but landing a drone over a six-figure Bentley sounds a little sketchy.
