In late October 2012, a flight team from New Mexico State University, assisted by engineers from Sandia National Laboratories, completed the first in a series of test flights to evaluate various unmanned aircraft systems in the frigid Arctic conditions at the North Slope of Alaska.

These autonomous systems hold the potential to complete remotely-operated research flights over the Arctic Ocean from the ARM Climate Research Facility’s newest mobile observation station at Oliktok Point, Alaska.
