US Vice Admiral Bill Gortney, director of the Joint Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon news briefing that once the bombing and missile campaign ends in Libya, unmanned Global Hawk aircraft will conduct a bomb damage assessment. The USAF also confirms that a Global Hawk flew in support of no-fly-zone operations before March 21.
Images taken by the Global Hawk will be transferred to the USS Mount Whitney aircraft carrier which commands multinational forces in the operations against Libya, which began March 19. Global Broadcast Service equipment installed on the ship can downlink data from unmanned aircraft, according to the Navy’s 2011 Programme Guide.
