The Estonian Ministry of Interior is looking into ways to start using unmanned aircraft systems for different applications by the police and rescue services, providing aerial support in areas where the use of helicopters or aircraft is not possible or feasible.
“Our objective is simple – to introduce a new tool in the area of internal security. Drones could not substitute helicopters or aircraft in all situations, but their use is often more flexible, faster, efficient and economic,” said Rene Allik, adviser of the migration and border guard policy department of the Ministry who coordinates the project adviser.
“Use of unmanned aircraft systems in police or rescue work is nothing innovative these days, and needs to be used smartly to ensure that this modern technology is fully used,” he added.
The Ministry and Estonian enterprise Threod Systems OÜ have already signed a contract to study the possibilities of using UAS and develop solutions for using unmanned aircraft sytems.
