The FAA published a policy document N8900.227 as an update to the January 2013 outline of the agency’s plan for reviewing and evaluating the safety and interoperability of proposed unmanned aircraft system (UAS) flight operations conducted within the U. S. National Airspace System (NAS) when assessing applications for a certificate of waiver or authorization.
A UAV is defined as an unmanned aircraft with a remotely located pilot-in-command. The proliferation of UAVs in both the public and private sectors has introduced greater exposure and elevated risk to the safety of operations within the NAS and increased the number of applications and demand on the FAA to process them.
The development of an often-updated notice was required for the FAA to use when evaluating applications, which currently consider that operators must comply with both FAR Part 61 and 91 to win approval to operate in U.S. civil airspace.
The FAA’s UAS Integration Office (AFS-80) makes the final decisions on allUAV applications.
