The Hungarian government is hoping to harness EU funds to operate a fleet of unmanned aircraft systems capable of policing the country’s skies.
The UAS would be deployed by the Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal (NAV, or national tax and customs office), and be mostly aimed at cigarette smugglers.
The acquisition would be financed by the EU’s Hercule-II program, which offers money to member states to strengthen cooperation with the EU’s Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), as well as to combat smuggling.
There has reportedly been a major jump in cigarette smuggling in Hungary since the enactment in July of sweeping regulations that limited the retail sales of tobacco products to licensed “national tobacco shops.”
