The Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Aviation Services (OAS) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) regarding operation of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) in Class G airspace.
This MoA increases access for public sUAS operations involving scientific applications, wildlife surveys, and Search and Rescue. DOI is only the third agency to be granted this status by the FAA. OAS initiated development of a DOI UAS capability in 2006 and began sUAS flight operations in 2010.
