The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) will host a Proposers’ Day Conference for the Great Horned Owl (GHO) Programme on August 15, 2011, in anticipation of the release of a new solicitation in support of the programme.
The Conference will be held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The purpose of the conference will be to provide introductory information on GHO and the research problems that the programme aims to address and to respond to questions from potential proposers.
The use of Unmanned Air Vehicles has become more commonplace and their utility in the smart collection of actionable intelligence more pervasive. The Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) role for UAVs is dependent upon the ability of the UAV to do its mission without the adversary being able to counter it.
For many such ISR applications, the acoustic signature of the UAV alerts the adversary to the UAV’s presence and can interfere with its mission. Very small battery powered systems can be very quiet but have operational timelines that are too short.
The GHO Programme seeks to develop technologies and systems for quiet UAVs that significantly extend the operational time of small ISR UAVs.
