AeroVironment Files Patent Application for Hydrogen Powerplant and Related Control System

AeroVironment Inc filed a patent application for “A hydrogen fueled power-plant including an internal combustion engine that drives a motor-generator, and has a two-stage turbocharger, for an aircraft.”

“A control system controls the operation of the motor-generator to maintain the engine at a speed selected based on controlling the engine equivalence ratio. The control system controls an afterburner, an intercooler and an after-cooler to maximize power-plant efficiency. The afterburner also adds power to the turbochargers during high-altitude restarts. The turbochargers also include motor-generators that extract excess power from the exhaust.” [Quote from the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks]

The patent application for power-plant and related control system and method was filed on April 4, 2011. The patent application number is 1429/KOLNP/2011 A. The inventors are Brooks Alexander Nelson and Daley James Gallagher. The international classification number is B60K 6/00.
